Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar objectives are taught once a week and we follow a Long term and Medium Term plan to ensure all objectives are covered in year groups.
Teachers use termly assessments to adapt planning where necessary in order to ensure that children confidently understand and remember content.
Spellings are sent home to learn on a weekly basis and all classes have a set spelling session, where learnt spellings are tested and new spellings are taught. Children learn these spellings through a range of activities, including rainbow spellings, which has proven very effective for our children.
Children also focus on letter formation when learning new spellings. Spelling lists include words that consist of the new spelling rules for the week and words from topics they are learning in foundation subjects.
Children have spelling books to practice at home and these are sent home weekly with new spellings in.
Children who are not accessing the spelling rules for their year group, have differentiated spellings to send home. Some may have less to learn to prevent cognitive overload.
In Reception and Year 1, children have spellings linked to their phonics sounds learnt. Some Year 2 children also learn phonics spellings if needed.
